  1. The pursuit of money is bad

    -Vicky
    Group 3

With the development of our material life, money has become a hot topic among people. There is a common phenomenon that some people set money as the criteria of judging everything, and they spare no effort to earn as much money as possible. Typically, this is the pursuit of money. Generally speaking, the pursuit of money does not mean that people are fond of cash. It shows that they regard money as one of the most important parts of their life or even as their ultimate goals of life. Personally speaking, I think the pursuit of money is not good. It has adverse impacts on both individuals and society.

    Impacts on individuals

People who run after money seem more ambitious and competitive than the others. In order to earn more money, they work harder and exert their imaginations to be more creative. Thus, they can do a good job and achieve a lot in the companies. It looks as if they live a good life, however, the strong desire of owning money can also make people become cold-blooded, snobbish and greedy.

Firstly, if there is no profit, people who pursue money will not lend a hand even to their best friends. When someone wants to borrow money from them, it seems impossible. They regard money as important as their lives, so how can they make sacrifices for others? I will never make friends with such kind of people, because such insincere persons who always consider money cannot be called friends. Furthermore, they may be eager to make friends with my money rather than me.

Secondly, as the pursuit of money will gradually become a habit, even when they have already had enough money, they will feel as if they lack it. Some may worry about what if their money disappears one day, while the others may be greedy to earn more money in illegal ways. A good case in point is the corrupt officials. They have already had enough money but still appropriate the public fund.

From my point of view, life does not make any sense for those people who have plenty of money but have no sincere friends to share their happiness and have wrong sense of value. Instead of living a good life, they will be more anxious and lonely.

    Impacts on social

Some suggest that the development of our society can be promoted by the power of money. Indeed, setting money as prizes for some competitions is a big temptation. People can be motivated by it. On the other hand, some will neglect the rules of competition and try to achieve their goals illegally and immorally. If the packing houses use overdue food, the pharmaceutical factories make fake medicines and the bookmen publish inappropriate books just in order to gain more profits, how will our society be like? People have no healthy food to eat, no effective drugs to cure their diseases and no good magazines to enrich their life. Instead of being promoted, the development of society will be restricted.

There is no denying that money is necessary for us, but it is not our whole life after all. Pursuing money can easily lead people to be the slaves of money. When that day comes, people will become snobbish and selfish which means that they will not have sincere friends anymore. Society will become unstable, and no one will feel happy in it. In a word, the pursuit of money is bad.

  2. The pursuit of money is good
    Cherry group 5

The Pursuit of Happiness, a movie mainly discussing the perspectives and attitudes towards life, is highly recommended by Mick La Salle in the San Francisco Chronicle. In this movie, attentive audience may find it interesting that Chris Gardner, the main character, actually starts his pursuit of happiness through the pursuit of a challenging career for financial consideration, in other words, for money. A ridiculous idea as it might be at first glance, the pursuit of money is actually a social topic that confronts every individual.

Standing on the base of life, I believe, the pursuit of money is good. For the motivation and competition it brings about, the pursuit of money consequently leads to technological development and higher living standards. Although this may not be a suitable option as the sole or the terminal goal of life, the pursuit of money can be, and actually it is, an optimistic life attitude. It turns out o be a good one, if given serious evaluation.

To start with, the guarantee of good living standards, without the pursuit of money, is just a fantasy. It is the pursuit of money which provides us with the financial support for higher quality of life. the pursuit of money helps relieve the burden of life. As a consequence, people no longer need to bother about the cash for lunch, tips for waitress, or power bills. Therefore, they enjoy easier lifestyles.

Secondly, the pursuit of money offers the incentive for technological progress. People delve into applied science and technology for commercial demand. Annually, hundreds and thousands of Asian engineers graduate form American universities and seek for jobs in IT industry. In 2005 alone, there were up to 144,594 new patents in computer technology and another 121,350 in electrical machinery technology (World Intellectual Property Upgrading Organization [WIPO], 2008).

In addition, the pursuit of money is also about the pursuit of stronger ability to donate and contribute for social benefit. It is noticeable that most charities are supported by the rich. Bill Gate’s $ 5 billion donation amazed the world in 1999. It was the largest amount of donation at that time. seven years later, Warren Buffet followed and donated $ 30 billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which was the largest one in 2006 (Loomis, 2006).

Although “money” spears to be a word that is too snobbish for some people, still, there is no reason for us to deny its beneficial aspects. The pursuit of money itself is innocent. It does not necessarily mean one’s overlooking other areas of life, e.g. the family, the friendship or the true love. It is not a factor which will definitely lead to the desperate practice. A “money runner”, as a matter of fact, usually possesses an edge over others. It is about more chances to pursue other aspects of life which are also worth cherishing. The successful businessman of a press, Benjamin Franklin, for instance, is also regarded as a great politician, outstanding sociologist and intelligent scientist along the history.

To sum up, the pursuit of money has provided us with a solid base for the pursuit of alternative life-long gals. It is an optimistic attitude. It motives people to keep upgrading, offering the chance repay to society and broaden one’s horizon. The pursuit of money is good after all.

  3. Topic: it is better to live in the city than in the country
    from: Cindy (group 5)

Recently as people are paying more and more attention to the quality of life, there has been a heated discussion about whether it is better to live in the city or in the country. Opinions vary from person to person. Some may assert that it is better to live in the country because of its peaceful atmosphere and the gentle pace of living, while others prefer city to country for the simple reason that city can actually provide everything we need.

Personally I find that city is the perfect place for living. Compared to the countryside, city can always provide us with the best level of education and healthcare. Unlike the country which has limited ways of recreation, city life can fill up our leisure time constructively and will never let us feel bored. The fast pace of life is just suitable for young people who have lots of energy and enthusiasm.

I am always amazed when my friends go into rapture at the mere mention of the countryside. They maintain that n nothing can be compared with the first cockcrow, the twittering of birds at dawn, the sight of the rising sun glinting on the trees and pastures. However they fail to mention the long and friendless winter evenings when there is no such idyllic scenery outside and you have no choice but to watch TV. On the contrary, there is no shortage of entertainment in the city. The latest exhibitions, concerts and plays can never let us feel lonely. Shopping, too, is always a pleasure. There is so much variety that we never have to make do with second best.

Secondly, the city has a high standard of education and medical care. Normally, there is only one school and one clinic in the countryside which lacks in the advanced facilities. However, the city has famous universities and hospitals with better conditions and experienced doctors who are specialized in treating different diseases. For children in the city, they can visit the science museum and attend all kinds of lectures to broaden their horizons in more vivid ways.

A lot of people preferring country life claim that the gentle pace of living brings benefits to the mental health. Since we are young teenagers who have energy and strong motivation to strive for success, I believe that a little stress may push us forward to make rapid progress.

In conclusion, I believe that it is better to live in the city despite the drawbacks it may have. If you can do without the few pastoral pleasures of the country, you will find that the city can provide you with the best that life can offer. The fast development of city makes city dwellers develop as well. It is in the city where our dreams are. We work hard to promote the values of ourselves and gain the success we deserve. Finally, the choices differ from person to person, as long as they find the best state of their lives, whether in the country or in the city.
